More and more information is being read online, but good journalism is more important there than ever. To this end, publishers such as “Krone” are vigorously expanding digitization.
Media use is changing: many readers, especially young people, only want information in digital form. In the “Krone” we also offer more content online under editor Christoph Dichand. “The best is in the printed newspaper,” says Krone co-owner Julia Becker (Funke Group) in a lecture at the Vienna Media Days, in which she outlines the future that concerns all publishers.
But good journalism is more important than ever. Because given the many fake news that z. B. are distributed via social media channels, there is a great need for high-quality reporting. Seriousness, background information, orientation for “user” and “reader” are the criteria that make a successful product, whether digital or print.
For that you need a lot of editors – certainly in the region – who are on site and who deliver the good stories. Becker: “It is expensive and time-consuming.” That is why it is important to also win online users as subscribers, because the future belongs to this segment, as you can see from the reading behavior of young people.
What is successful digitization?
Julia Becker mentions four points that are necessary for a successful digitization:
- “Online first”, ie the processing of the story takes place first and faster on the Internet.
- This calls for smart transition concepts, because the print editions, which form the financial backbone of the publishers, should not be neglected.
- You have to invest in quality, you have to attract the brightest minds to journalism.
- And of course you need the best technology to load content. B. the new “Krone” ePaper should not be long.
You have to convince the readers with quality and innovations so that they also become online subscribers. Julia Becker also emphasized the importance of the Austrian participations of the Funke Group in “Krone” and “Kurier”.
