More guests from abroad – tourism in August above pre-pandemic levels

The Austrian tourist industry can be satisfied with August: there were a total of 20.67 million overnight stays in Austrian accommodation companies. This surpassed the pre-pandemic level of August 2019 by 2.3 percent, Statistics Austria reports. This plus is mainly due to foreign guests. They are responsible for 73.7 percent of the total 20.67 million overnight stays in August 2022.

With 15.24 million overnight stays, the highest number of overnight stays by guests from abroad was achieved since August 1993. But even compared to the pre-pandemic level of August 2019, lodging providers recorded a three percent increase in overnight stays. Compared to the same period last year, this is an increase of 4.8 percent. About three quarters of the overnight stays are accounted for by guests from Germany, the Netherlands and Italy. German guests accounted for 57.1 percent of all overnight stays abroad, followed by guests from the Netherlands (11.3 percent) and Italy (4.9 percent).

26.3 percent of guests from Austria
With 5.43 million overnight stays, 26.3 percent were guests from Austria. This roughly corresponds to the pre-pandemic level of 5.40 million overnight stays. The lodging companies, however, recorded a significant decrease compared to the “pandemic years” 2020 and 2021: Compared to August 2020, Statistics Austria registered a decrease of 18.5 percent in overnight stays by Austrian guests and compared to August 2021 a minus of 12.8 percent Percent .

The main months of the summer tourist season, July and August, registered a total of 38.62 million overnight stays this year, only 0.8 percent less than in the same period in 2019. The number of overnight stays by foreign guests was still 1.9 percent lower than the level. as of 2019, that of domestic guests is 2 percent above pre-pandemic levels. Compared to July and August 2021, overnight stays increased by 6.3 percent, with domestic guest nights falling by 11.30 percent and overnight stays by foreign guests by 14.70 percent.

Holidaymakers appreciate a higher standard
With guests appreciating a higher standard on vacation, as the July data shows: 5.36 million or nearly 30 percent of overnight stays were in 4/5 star accommodations, according to these. This corresponds to an increase of 13.4 percent. Three-star hotels accounted for 3.21 million overnight stays – an increase of 16.1 percent.

The accommodation providers can also be satisfied with the course of the year so far (January to August). At 101.18 million, there were twice as many overnight stays as in the same period last year (plus 100.6 percent). Compared to the pre-pandemic level, however, this is a minus of 12.2 percent.
