The solar panels placed in a vineyard move automatically, taking into account the moisture of the earth or the solar radiation
The vineyards of González Byass and Grupo Emperador in Guadamur (Toledo) will benefit from the first intelligent agrovoltaic installation in Spain. The company Iberdrola took care of it. This innovative installation makes it possible to adapt the placement of the solar panels to the needs of the vineyards in order to regulate the incidence of sunlight and the temperature through the shade of the panels.
In particular, trackers controlled by an artificial intelligence algorithm determine the optimal position of the solar panels placed on the vines at all times. The slope is determined based on the information collected by the sensors placed in the vineyards and recording data such as solar radiation, soil moisture, wind conditions or the thickness of the vine trunk.
In this way, the installation will contribute to improve the quality of the grapes, allow a more efficient use of the land, reduce the consumption of irrigation water and improve the resistance of this crop to climatic conditions due to the rise in temperature and waves of heat, which are becoming more frequent.
The production of this pilot plant, with a capacity of 40 kilowatts, will be used entirely for their own consumption by the wineries González Byass and Grupo Emperador, which will also be able to reduce their polluting emissions, make progress in decarbonising their activities and reduce their energy costs. In the coming year, Iberdrola will follow the results of this project, called “Winesolar”, with the intention of implementing more intelligent agrovoltaic installations in other wine farms in Spain, a country that concentrates 13% of the world’s vineyard land.
