On Wednesday, the Romanian subsidiary of the timber company Egger, located in St. Johann in Tirol, was raided. There were nearly 150 searches – the focus was on illegal logging, money laundering, tax evasion and embezzlement. Egger himself was also affected by the robbery.
Egger operates a chipboard and OSB board production plant in the Suceava region of northeastern Romania. According to research by “profil”, ORF and the German news magazine “Der Spiegel”, the Romanian authorities carried out 146 house searches. However, the company itself and its employees are not the suspects: “In concrete terms, the Romanian authorities suspect several wood suppliers who supply Egger, among others.”
The judiciary and the executive were interested in the business relationship and needed the relevant documents. Egger also handed them over, the company said in a statement.
fines in the previous year
The timber company also emphasized that it is an “ardent proponent of sustainable timber management”. In Romania, primary forests are partly protected. The country is struggling with illegal logging of these forests. Egger had problems with the Romanian competition authority last year and eventually had to pay a fine of around five million euros. At the time, the group said it was “individual misconduct”.
