The cabinet has reached agreement on the pension increase. Representatives of retirees speak of “break of the word”.
That can’t be all,” says Ingrid Korosec, president of the ÖVP Senior Citizens’ Association, cautiously. Her red counterpart Peter Kostelka, president of the SPÖ Pensioners’ Association, is more willing to fight: “It’s a blatant breach of contract. Because we have been promised another round of negotiations, and now the government decides on its measures without notifying us.”
As it became known on Monday, the cabinet wants to present the pension adjustments for 2023 on Tuesday: the first details have already been leaked and these make the pensioners’ representatives anything but satisfied.
Retired representatives are disappointed
For example, the income of the approximately 200,000 pensioners with a compensation benefit for the year 2023 will be increased by about ten percent.
This increase consists of a structural increase in the compensation allowance and a direct payment. It is said that for the approximately 2.2 million other pensioners there will be more than the legal 5.8 percent. There should be a loop through rule for this. “The government pension package is a sham. There is no approval for that”, Kostelka rages.
