There is a risk of further flight cancellations and delays with Austrian Airlines (AUA). The works council for the on-board staff wants to reschedule the meeting scheduled for next Friday next week. On March 8, 150 flights had already been canceled.
According to the company, the failure of the affected connections cannot be changed because they have already been removed from the system. It has now been announced that the canceled company meeting will be moved next week. “We regret that flight irregularities will occur both this Friday and next week,” the works council’s circular said.
According to the AUA, damages for next Friday alone amount to four million euros and any claims for compensation are currently being assessed. The company has already filed summary proceedings. The judge must clarify on which days a company meeting can actually be held, whether a notice period of 16 days applies and whether the duration of the meeting must be announced in advance.
Cancellation due to lack of space
As reported, no location has been found for the meeting. The works council said the NH Hotel at Vienna Airport, which manages the meeting rooms, had informed that the owner needed to carry out “safety-related inspection work” at short notice. The airport, in turn, emphasized that it was “very busy” at the airport and that a space for 600 people was therefore not available at the push of a button. The airport company is also not concerned about where the works council meets.
The AUA management considers the meeting illegal and is therefore not renting a building this time. The reason for the meetings is the stalled collective labor agreement negotiations. The union is demanding higher wages for pilots and flight attendants.
