The president of Telefónica believes that it is “the time for Europe” and that telecommunications plays a key role in the transformation

The solution to the current crisis is to “urgently” promote energy autonomy. This was explained this Tuesday by the executive president of Telefónica, José María Álvarez-Pallete, at the German Hispanic Forum in Berlin. “Europe must move to the next level with a sufficiently strategic European culture to immediately develop Europe’s strategic autonomy,” the group’s president emphasized during his speech.

And this concept of strategic autonomy is not a return to the old ideas of protectionism and isolationism, but must be built on ‘solid internal pillars’ and cannot serve to ‘sow new fields of misunderstanding’. The aim is for Europe to be “more and better prepared” to work with its partners and strengthen transatlantic ties, relations between countries and global presence, said the manager, also emphasizing the need to move forward. in related European projects in the fields of artificial intelligence, security, defence, information, communication, with intelligent fiber optics, 5G and edge computing at the forefront.

In this sense, he emphasized the “key role” of telecommunications for Europe’s strategic autonomy, as he believes they are “the door to the future”. Pallete, who is also chairman of the GSMA council (the association that organizes events such as the Mobile World Congress), stressed the importance of a “robust and sustainable” telecommunications sector.

The chairman of the company believes that “it is time for Europe” and that the big challenge is “ensuring a fair digital transition”. “It’s time to build a Europe of values,” Pallete said during his speech.
