The currently emerging wave of corona is now also making its way into aviation – according to a media report, 52 of Austrian Airlines’ 360 scheduled flights were canceled on Saturday alone.
According to “Kurier”, the cause of the many failures is mainly a large number of corona absenteeism among the staff. The AUA has not yet been able to explain how the operations should proceed on Sunday. The company advises passengers to inquire whether the booked flight will operate as scheduled.
Especially flight attendants affected
The reason for the flight cancellations is mainly “increasing corona infections among the crews”, according to an airline spokeswoman. Absenteeism due to illness had increased, especially among flight attendants. The now so numerous absenteeism could be a result of the suspension of the mask requirement on board the aircraft – since 1 June this has only been voluntary.
There would also be an air traffic control strike at Marseille airport and yesterday’s storms would also affect flight operations.
It is unclear how many passengers have been affected
According to the report, it is not known how many passengers will be unable to start their journey today. An attempt is being made to actively contact those affected and to rebook them on other Lufthansa Group flights, the spokeswoman said.
