Despite the pandemic, Austria’s preference for retail is still very strong. That’s according to a new study. Accordingly, 42 percent of Austrians much prefer to shop in stores, while only 22 percent clearly prefer online shopping.
This places Austria above the international average for retail, which has leveled off at 34 percent, and at the same time below the average for online shopping (28 percent). This is the result of a data analysis by the online payment provider Klarna.
Interesting: in Germany slightly more consumers prefer online commerce (30 percent) over retail (28 percent).
Pandemic has boosted online shopping worldwide
The fact is, the pandemic has boosted online shopping worldwide – and in Austria in particular. This is the result of a data analysis by the online payment provider Klarna. According to these figures, the trend towards online shopping in Germany between the second quarter of 2021 and the third quarter of 2022 is the third fastest in an international comparison – after Australia and Germany.
Only “Generation Z” usually at home when shopping online
The survey also shows that the younger the respondents, the higher the value of those who prefer to shop online. Only the so-called “Generation Z” (aged 18 to 24) has more e-commerce preferences than retail enthusiasts. There, 32 percent prefer to shop online and only 31 percent ‘in person’. The “baby boomer” generation (aged 57 to 70) is quite the opposite: only 14 percent prefer online commerce over retail, with 51 percent preferring it.
