The number of vacancies in Austria rose to a record high in the third quarter. 218,100 jobs were vacant – more than at any time since the survey began in 2009, according to Statistical Austria on Friday. Compared to the third quarter of the pre-crisis year 2019, this corresponds to an increase of no less than 70 percent. Most vacancies were in the service sector, where 130,900 employees were sought.
Another 56,000 jobs had to be filled in the manufacturing industry. In the public sector, 31,200 new employees were needed.
For the survey, Statistics Austria randomly asks 6,000 Austrian companies for vacancies every quarter. The key figure of the statistical office was 50 percent above the reported vacancies in the labor market service.
128,300 vacancies were counted in the third quarter of 2019, since then the number has increased by 70 percent. Compared to the third quarter of 2021, there was an increase of 34 percent.
Skills shortage is getting worse
“The vacancy rate, ie the share of vacancies in all available jobs, also gives a clear indication of the increasing shortage of specialists and workers,” says Statistics boss Tobias Thomas. Vacancies accounted for five percent of all positions (vacancy and occupied) in the third quarter. The rate was about 40 percent above pre-pandemic levels (Q3 2019).
