When doctors themselves become patients, they suddenly experience the “other side”: this happened to a Carinthian doctor who referred himself to a radiologist with complaints. When he found nothing during the examinations, he was relieved at first – until the cancer diagnosis came months later. The specialist had overlooked the tumor!
A Carinthian GP had pain in the lower abdomen, so he referred to a radiological specialist. He couldn’t find anything suspicious on the computed tomography. The patient was initially reassured, but the symptoms did not go away. More than six months later, in the clinic in Klagenfurt, he was diagnosed with the terrible diagnosis: cancer! The tumor was already so large that the kidney and ureter had to be removed. His medical colleagues, he said, had made a medical mistake because they overlooked the carcinoma early on.
