The father and a driver who happened to pass by were the rescuers last Sunday. The one-year-old has since been discharged from the Innsbruck clinic. He will not suffer any lasting consequences.
Last Sunday’s nightmare ended with great joy and relief: behind his father’s snack bar on Salzburger Straße – as reported by “Krone” – a one-year-old boy fell into the Mühlbachl, which was about two meters wide and one meter deep in St Johann Tyrol. The child was swept away by the current, the father desperately wanted to stop drivers, gesticulating wildly. “Four or five vehicles passed by. Then I stopped, although I didn’t know what was going on,” Franz Jöchl describes the strange situation.
Car stopped and jumped in
The father jumped into the locals’ car and kept shouting “drive” and “quick, quick”. About 300 meters further, the back seat suddenly said “stop”. The father ran across the main road to the nearby stream, jumped in and seconds later had his son in his arms.
The boy did not move and initially gave no sign of life. “But suddenly he screamed loudly, a huge relief,” said Jöchl. He and his wife also ran to the stream and then alerted emergency services. The one-year-old was flown by ambulance helicopter to the Innsbruck clinic with severe hypothermia. Jöchl also saw blood on the boy’s mouth. The father thanked him after the rescue operation, but after that there was still no contact with the motorist who was helping. Jöchl is all the more relieved that he got the good news from the clinic after all.
Driver: “I’ll never forget that”
“The boy was released on Monday,” confirms the clinic’s spokesman, Johannes Schwamberger. He should have survived the drama without any consequential damage.
Jöchl, who made a decisive contribution to saving lives, is still angry about the incident despite the happy ending: “It was an extremely stressful situation, I will never forget it.”
