Salary negotiations – “You can only retain staff with a fair salary”

Date:

The unions in the social economy in Austria are demanding a 15 percent wage increase. Styrian workers are fighting and holding work meetings this week.

The metal processors have been through since the end of last week and have negotiated a wage increase of about 7.5 percent in the autumn wage round. In other sectors, negotiations are still in the hot phase – and given the rampant inflation wave, workers have been particularly combative this year.

Actions must follow “claps”.
Also in Styria, employee representatives call company meetings these days. On Monday, the employees of the social economy in Graz made the start. “For two years we were cheered as heroes in the Corona crisis, now we finally have to take action!” said Patrick Jauk, chairman of the works council of Lebenshilfe, in front of the assembled group and received thunderous applause for this.

The unions GPA and vida demand no less than 15 percent plus or at least 350 euros more on the monthly pay slip. This is in contrast to the previous offer of 7.5 percent of employers. “That just compensates for inflation, that doesn’t take us a step forward,” says Jauk.

Vacancies can only be filled with fair compensation
The day-to-day work in the social and health sector is becoming increasingly demanding and many dedicated employees are leaving the sector, was the gist of the meeting. “It is becoming increasingly difficult to fill vacancies and retain staff, which is only possible with fair compensation,” says Lebenshilfe employee Silvia Wisiak.

“We are also ready to strike”
If the next round of negotiations does not yield a satisfactory result, “we are also ready to strike”, emphasizes works council member Jauk. The commercial employees are also in the middle of heavy negotiations and work consultations, they are demanding an increase of ten percent. “The situation in the retail sector is extremely tense, the employees are completely exhausted after the crisis years,” says union woman Sandra Höllinger.
