The government is open to meetings with the carriers and recognizes “room for improvement” in the decree

Date:

Minister Sánchez assures that “she will do whatever it takes” to avoid the strike and organizers are willing to “put their feet on the ground” if there is a “clear commitment” to comply with the law prohibiting working at a loss

The strike called by the Platform for the Defense of Transport last March caused so many economic and logistical losses that month that the government does not want to repeat it a month after the start of the Christmas campaign. For this reason, the Minister of Transport, Raquel Sánchez, assured this Tuesday that “she will do what it takes” to avoid the indefinite strike that the same carriers have called from next Monday.

Although the head of Transport said in statements to Telecinco that “a strike of this magnitude makes no sense at this point” and warned that it “will benefit no one, neither inside nor outside the industry,” she opened up to meet with the carriers strike callers to talk about the decree that, in the opinion of the workers, is not being complied with.

Manuel Hernández, chairman of the platform, confirmed to this newspaper that they have not received any calls from the ministry for that meeting at this time. And he assured that they are willing to “put their feet on the ground” and call off the strike if there is a “clear commitment” on the part of the government to comply with the cost bill agreed last March after 20 days. of intense mobilizations according to which it is forbidden to work at a loss.

Hernández denounces that this situation is still occurring seven months later, now exacerbated by the rise in costs that carriers continue to incur, which he estimated at 30% more than a year ago. For that reason, according to their data, nearly 250 companies in the sector have disappeared in recent months.

This meeting between the Platform and Raquel Sánchez would be the second so far this year, after the minister agreed to speak with them after much urging from the organizers. After that meeting, Hernández says, they held a few more, but without the minister’s presence.

On this occasion, the Ministry has opened to dialogue with them from the beginning, although in its opinion “all agreements” reached with the sector have been fulfilled, and Sánchez recalled that the decree that improved the conditions for carriers approved in August, so perhaps not yet “full-fledged”.

For this reason, he acknowledges that there is “room for improvement” in the said decision, but insisted that if the industry finds violations thereof, it should report it to the inspectorates identifying the violator, because in general this “is not done » and complicates the imposition of the corresponding sanctions.
