“Prices must come down” – SPÖ demands gas bill waiver in December

Date:

Inflation is eleven percent. The SPÖ around its federal party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner is pushing for a gas ceiling like in Germany.

After weeks of asylum debate and Thomas Schmid’s confession, the SPÖ is now trying to change the subject. Inflation is already at 11 percent – and hardly a minister responds to that, says SPÖ boss Rendi-Wagner angrily. “In a few weeks, gas prices for the Austrian economy and industry will be about two to three times higher than in Germany,” said the SPÖ leader.

Gas: German households only pay half
In the future, German households will pay only half for gas compared to Austria. Why? Because Germany will introduce a gas price ceiling from December on the basis of advice from a committee of experts.

“Prices need to come down”
“In Austria this is still lacking. Our economy cannot keep up with these price differences,” says Rendi-Wagner. Following the German model, the SPÖ chairman demands the introduction of a gas price ceiling. To bridge the gap, no entrepreneur and no private household should pay the December gas bill. “People are already in cold apartments for fear of the next gas bill. Prices have to come down,” Rendi told the Krone.

The full gas bill waiver for a month is easy to manage. According to the SPÖ, this entire decision is intended to partially offset the gas costs for January and February.
