The craft company El Turro opens a new shop in the heart of Murcia, dedicated to the sale of typical products

For its expansion, it had the help of Aválam, the Mutual Guarantee Company of the Region of Murcia

‘More than a company, we are a tradition’. This is the legend of the poster that the Murcian company El Turro, specializing in the production of handicraft products, placed in its new premises “next to the photo of my grandfather and my great-grandfather”, says Francisco Hernández, manager of the company.

He is the fifth generation of a family that has “dedicated itself heart and soul to typical Murcian sweets,” says Francisco, who recalls that “El Turro didn’t even start with my grandparents, but rather: with my great-great-grandfather.”

A hundred-year-old company dedicated to the production and sale of typical Murcian products, such as Abarán picardías, fig or date bread, wine or fig wraps, nougats, caramelized fruits, Easter sweets or marzipans.

The history of this company started in a small workshop in Abarán, the municipality where the only shop was initially located. But “ten years ago, when we decided to focus on the sweetened products industry, looking for different formats to reach the end consumer through different channels, we recognized the need for a bigger and more effective workshop.”

It was then that they found an industrial warehouse on a local estate that met all expectations: “We could have a warehouse, workshop and shop,” says Francisco Hernández.

During the first years in said facility, the family chose to formalize a lease, “but after a while and thanks to the support of Aválam, the Mutual Guarantee Company of the Region of Murcia, we decided to buy it.”

A process that, “while difficult, was also a great success: we went from producing about 30 kilos a week to 1,000 kilos, and from making three types of caramellized to more than fourteen different types.”

An achievement that “would not have been possible without the help of Aválam, where we discovered great professionals who supported and advised us in a very human way to achieve our goals,” says Hernández.

After setting up its working model in the factory and consolidating a solid customer base for sugared products, El Turro opened a new store in September in the heart of Murcia, specifically on Platería Street.

This company is one of the companies to which the mutual insurance association of the Region has contributed to its expansion. In this sense, it should be noted that Aválam has allocated €40 million to SMEs and the self-employed in 2022 — the funding allocated has increased by 70% compared to the previous year.

Currently, in the new premises of El Turro, the public can find artisanal and traditional products all year round. They also prepare and sell business orders and ceremonies. All information is available on the website www.elturro.es.

Currently based in the capital of Murcia, the centenary company El Turro has received numerous awards, including the Mercury Prize in 2000, in which it received a special mention for crafts, and the centennial company award by the Chamber of Commerce in 1999 .
