Contract is expiring – will the airport run out of fuel now too?

Date:

More turbulence for Klagenfurt airport: after thirty years, the oil company Shell is not renewing the supply contract.

The tank farm at Klagenfurt Airport, previously operated by Shell, can hold a total of 250,000 liters of kerosene – enough for ten Boeing 737s. Now his future and that of the four highly qualified employees are in the stars, because the mineral oil company does not want to renew the contract that was concluded 30 years ago. If operator Lilihill does not find a replacement by the end of the year, aircraft will no longer be able to be refueled from January 1, 2023. But there they are optimistic and promise a seamless new regulation, which will be announced in December.

Main developments in December
In the coming weeks, some important points can be determined for the future of Klagenfurt Airport, because the connection to an international hub will also be presented in December. That was one of the four points in the commitment statement with which Lilihill wanted to appease the political dispute. Furthermore, the controversial lease agreement was terminated and commitments were made for a call option and BABEG’s participation in the development of the airport.

In the absence of official information, one can only speculate on the reasons why Shell withdraws the framework agreement and does not renew it. One possible reason could be that the fuel business at small airports is deteriorating and that the large corporations are therefore increasingly withdrawing from it.
