“Force majeure” – train strike: tens of thousands of students are excused

Date:

The railway workers’ warning strike, called on Monday after the failed KV negotiations, is also affecting tens of thousands of students, teachers and administrative staff in schools in several states. Due to the strike, the S-Bahn is also not running, in Salzburg, in addition to the Salzburger Landbahn and the Pinzgauer Landbahn, all city trolleybus traffic has been shut down. As of Sunday afternoon in Vienna, Salzburg, Styria and Carinthia, those who are late or absent from school due to the strike have been automatically excused.

Salzburg Education Council member Daniela Gutschi (ÖVP) regrets that “again, students are significantly affected”. After the last two years of Covid, this is doubly bitter, especially during school work hours. “Anyone who cannot come to school tomorrow due to the strike is automatically excused,” Gutschi emphasizes after a vote with director of education Rudolf Mair.

In Styria, too, students who are late or not at school due to the strike are excused, according to the Styrian education board.

“Force of the majority”
“Due to force majeure, teachers, students and administrative staff who cannot reach Viennese schools in any other way on November 28 are excused, Vienna education director Heinrich Himmer announced on Twitter on Sunday.

The approximately 3,500 students who travel by train every day in Carinthia are also exempt from the train strike, according to the education department of the southernmost state.
