During his visit to the United States, French President Emmanuel Macron met with new Twitter boss Elon Musk. Macron tweeted that he met Musk and had a “clear and honest discussion” with him. Musk has committed to taking action against terrorist and violent extremist content and to better protecting children online. They want to rely on automation at scale.
Since Musk’s takeover of Twitter, there have been widespread concerns that under his leadership and following the major job cuts he endured, more hate speech and abuse could end up on the platform. The tech billionaire herself had expressed such concerns with repeated criticism that Twitter had overrestricted free speech on the platform.
In another tweet, Macron wrote that he also exchanged thoughts with Musk about future green industrial projects, such as electric vehicle and battery manufacturing. In addition, the president provided a photo of Musk and himself at a conference table. “I look forward to exciting plans in France,” Musk wrote in response. He owns the electric car company Tesla.
Twitter moderation should be automated
Musk wants Twitter to rely more on automation when moderating content in the future. “The main thing that has changed is that the team is now able to act as quickly and aggressively as possible,” said Ella Irwin, Twitter’s new head of trust and security.
Investigators had seen a spate of hate speech since Elon Musk announced an amnesty for previously banned Twitter accounts. According to Irwin, Twitter now wants to push automation instead of relying on time-consuming and labor-intensive human reviews of harmful content.
