Family business from Upper Austria – Schotterbaron: Bernegger’s multi-million dollar projects

Date:

The Upper Austrian family business Bernegger is building two recycling plants with world-class technology and a huge storage plant.

After the war, the grandfather served the needs of the times with lime, gravel and gravel pits, current co-boss Kurt Bernegger Jun. meets the needs of the 21st century. The family business is currently investing hundreds of millions of euros in three spectacular projects.

The first focus is the expansion of the Ennshafen into a recycling center with globally pioneering technologies. Work is already underway on a plant for the thermal recovery of even the tiniest metal scraps from shredded cars, electronic devices, etc. After years of research with the Montanuni Leoben “we can now process the rest. From 70,000 tons, we want to extract about 3,000 tons of copper, nickel, tin, etc. in two furnaces, which is a completely new international dimension,” beams junior boss Kurt Bernegger, who is investing around 70 million euros for it. Operations are starting in a year.

A plastic sorting installation has also been established, which is being built together with ARA and the German Grüner Punkt collection system at a cost of 60 million euros. “It will be the largest in Austria and the most modern in Europe. From 2025 we want to automatically sort 100,000 tons of lightweight packaging per year.’ All in all, we plan ‘within 15 years seven recycling plants in Ennshafen for about 300 million euros, we own 22 hectares of land there’.

The biggest chunk, however, is the planned private storage power plant with a capacity of 300 MW near the headquarters in Molln. It will cost 500 million euros, has already been approved, “and now we are in the final phase of the search for a co-investor, the interest is great due to the high price of electricity”.

You just have courage when you invest, says Bernegger. The environmental area thus became the third pillar next to building materials and the construction company. With 1000 employees, Kurt Bernegger sen. and his brother’s group for 200 million euros.
