Although prices are rising, electric driving is still cheaper

Date:

Despite rising energy prices, switching from a combustion engine to an electric car is still worthwhile. ÖAMTC experts have now calculated this.

Energy prices are currently exploding – is it still worth switching to an electric car? “Yes, it is still cheaper to drive,” says Markus Kaiser, electromobility expert from the motorists’ club ÖAMTC.

Generous financing
He also states that the purchase price for e-cars is still a lot higher, but on the one hand the state continues to pay a generous subsidy of 5400 euros when purchasing a new car with an e-motor, and on the other hand there, running costs are still significantly cheaper despite the rise in electricity prices.

calculated example
He illustrates his thesis with a comparison between an electric Opel Corsa and the version with a spark ignition (petrol) engine. With a storage period of five years and a mileage of 15,000 kilometers per year, the electric version costs a total of about 24,000 euros – the petrol version with just over 30,000.

With the Stromer, consumption was measured at a price of 23 cents per kilowatt hour, with new customers of an electricity supplier this value rose to 35 cents. “The monthly electricity costs would thus increase from 67 to about 84 euros – which is still significantly cheaper compared to petrol engines with fuel costs of 119 euros,” says Kaiser.

Public charging stations have become more expensive
However, according to the expert, it should also be noted that public fast charging stations have also become more expensive. “These are now on average 55 cents per kilowatt hour. That is an increase to 20 cents.”
