At the turn of the year, the boss of the National Bank Robert Holzmann (73) talks about a “bear year” and the long-awaited upturn, the bank’s own violins at the New Year’s concert and the introduction of Styrian pumpkin seed oil at the OeNB.
The governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank is in a good mood as he greets us on the 5th floor of the late classical building on Otto-Wagner-Platz in Vienna. Blue suit, red and white tie – a colorful tribute to the new euro member Croatia. His office reflects a penchant for unrest: alongside historic clocks and two landscape paintings (the native Alps and Marseille, where Holzmann once lived), a garish portrait of a woman by Austrian artist Michaela Spiegel catches the eye. “Do you know who that is?” asks the head of the central bank mischievously, revealing it himself in the next second.
