Adjustments needed – dissatisfaction with construction work on “Deutsches Eck”

Date:

There is dissatisfaction in Tyrol and Vorarlberg about Deutsche Bahn’s plans to renovate the “Deutsches Eck”. The planned closures would severely disrupt train traffic in the two states, even during busy spring weekends. In letters to Deutsche Bahn, the responsible state councils demanded adjustments.

DB Netz AG plans to close the corridor between Salzburg and Kufstein for a total of nine weekends in March and April. However, about 30 long-distance trains connect Vorarlberg and Tyrol with the rest of Austria. In addition, the route for international long-distance traffic, such as the direct connection between Zurich and Vienna, is of great importance, emphasized Tyrolean provincial councilor Rene Zumtobel (SPÖ) and his Vorarlberg counterpart Daniel Zadra (Greens) in their letters. Especially during busy weekends on Palm Sunday, Easter and the May 1 national holiday, “enormous consequences for tens of thousands of passengers in long-haul traffic can be expected,” says Zadra.

Fear of a reduction in supply
Zumtobel also fears that traffic will be shifted to the road due to the reduced service and the longer train journey. The Westbahn trains could not run at all, those of the ÖBB only via diversion via Zell am See. In addition, 70 percent of trains to and from Munich would be canceled on the days in question. DB’s approach “ignores the needs of Austrian and international long-distance passengers. There is no other explanation for the complete halt of traffic on the corridor route during the busiest travel weekends of the year,” Zumtobel criticized.

The construction work must therefore be carried out in such a way that the effects on rail customers are as small as possible. “Please double check it thoroughly, thank you,” Zadra wrote to the DB Netz board member. The aim should be to reduce traffic restrictions by changing construction site planning. Traffic should be maintained at least during the busiest travel weekends. Zumtobel also requested a “changed timetable” in the sense of a rail customer and a climate-friendly solution.

ÖBB also tries to optimize construction times
The ÖBB told the APA that the route was under the sovereignty of Deutsche Bahn. You have a basic knowledge of renovation works. At the same time, the ÖBB emphasized that it was a very important corridor connecting eastern and western Austria as quickly as possible. In the event of a blockade, train traffic within Austria would have to be diverted via Zell am See, which means an 80 to 90 minute longer journey for travelers. In March and April, different numbers of trains are affected, sometimes all of them, on all weekends. They are in contact with the DB and try to optimize the construction times in the interests of the travelers. A replacement bus service is also offered.
