Amazon will lay off thousands of employees in the United States, Canada and Costa Rica by Wednesday (local time). The company reports this to its employees in a memo that has come into the hands of Reuters.
In early January, CEO Andy Jassy announced that the company would lay off about six percent of its approximately 300,000 employees. In total, more than 18,000 jobs would be cut, Jassy wrote in a circular to civil servants.
Amazon’s downsizing is part of a larger upheaval among tech and internet companies. In addition to Amazon, Microsoft also recently announced mass layoffs – about 11,000 jobs at the Windows group will be cut. Thousands of employees have also recently been laid off on Facebook.
