US giant announces the layoff of 6% of its global workforce, adding to the wave of austerity sweeping the industry
Winter is tough for technology companies. Following the layoffs announced on Amazon, Meta and Twitter, Microsoft this week launched the process to lay off 10,000 people. And this Friday it was Google’s turn after the CEO of parent company Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, sent a letter to employees announcing the layoff of 12,000 employees, meaning 6% of the total workforce worldwide will be cut.
Pichai takes “full responsibility for the decisions that led us here” in an email he sent this morning. He explains that in the United States affected employees have already been contacted by email, but the process will take longer in the rest of the countries “due to local laws and practices”. The company is currently not providing any information about the consequences of this decision for Spain.
The director explained that over the past two years, the multinational had pursued a hiring policy “to match and fuel the spectacular growth experienced during that period”. “We are hiring for a different economic reality than the one we face today,” he acknowledged. In this sense, it has specified that the functions to be eliminated are the result of a thorough evaluation carried out on all areas and functions to ensure that they meet the company’s key priorities and “alphabet, product areas, functions, cover levels”. and regions ».
The company has made sure that they will pay two months of salary to those affected until they leave the company, they will be compensated with 16 weeks of salary for every year at Google and six months of health insurance, as well as job placement.
“As a company of almost 25 years, we are forced to go through difficult economic cycles. These are important times to sharpen our focus, realign our cost base and focus our talent and capital on our top priorities,” said Pichai, who postponed a meeting with employees until Monday.
