Escrivá acknowledges the failure of the system, which charged the minimum fee instead of the flat rate of 80 euros to entrepreneurs who registered in the first week of January
Some 8,000 new self-employed people started the year with an unexpected expense: social security wrongly charged them the minimum wage, which is almost 300 euros, when they should have been charged the ‘fixed rate’, namely 80 euros, at entrepreneurs who registered their activity this month. This means up to 220 euros more, which will be refunded “in the next few days”.
This was stated on Thursday by Social Security Minister José Luis Escrivá, who in statements on RNE admitted “the error”, explained that these “administrative errors sometimes occur” and promised to correct them “soon”.
This statement was made among the new self-employed persons who registered in the system between January 1 and January 9, a total of about 8,000, according to estimates by the ministry. Their social security contribution during the first year is subsidized because it is a new company and they only have to pay 80 euros per month, but this month they have been charged the minimum fee, which is about 300 euros.
The Ministry is already in the process of e-mailing interested parties about what happened and the actions they will take to correct it. From the department, they assure that they will be charged the flat rate in February and that they will try to pay the difference between the fee billed in January and the 80 euros they were expected to receive in March, although Escrivá spoke of “in the next few days.”
We should not forget that the more than 3.5 million self-employed started the year with a new premium system based on real income, which has led to a change in the contributions they pay to Social Security. With the new model, half of the group will pay less than before, 25% will keep their contribution while the other 25% will shoot up, about 750,000 people.
