Entrepreneurship is underrepresented in Austria. “There are many ideas, but the execution is lacking,” says entrepreneur and investor Philipp Maderthaner. “The facilitator attitude is more common abroad.” He sees part-time work as a “luxury problem” – if you want to be successful, you have to work hard – and invest in yourself. He is not surprised that employers cannot find staff: “We talk too often about food stamps or vouchers,” asks moderator Conny Winiwarter.
Maderthaner knows what he’s talking about: he was voted best employer by “Great Place to Work”. The secret of success “is a manager who helps his employees and under whom people can develop”. This is how employee retention works.
However, the entrepreneur does not believe that employers alone are responsible for supplying qualified personnel. “You don’t have to have done anything wrong to have a problem,” he says. What does he mean? The cohort that will retire this year consists of 125,000 people. On the other hand, 75,000 people will enter the labor market this year.
“People don’t want to burn themselves anymore”
There used to be one extreme: people who worked from early in the morning until late at night, regularly pushed their limits and retired completely burnt out and exhausted. That has changed a lot: “It’s good that people don’t want to burn themselves anymore!” – but you should not go to the other extreme now. “We have much more to do with the fact that some people cannot make ends meet despite having a full-time job than with the luxury problem of working part-time,” says the investor, known for the television program ‘ 2 minutes, 2 million’. One thing is clear: “If you want to be successful, you have to work hard.” Quick success on social media is a myth.
Young people should “maximize their investment in themselves”
Especially when you are young, you have “the energy to work full-time” – and study at the same time. Investing in yourself, your skills and knowledge is the most important thing according to Maderthaner. You can respond to that in the coming years. From April 15, Philipp Maderthaner will go on tour. Under the title “High up – now more so more!” he wants to inspire, motivate and “give the necessary kick” to people. Tickets are available on his website.
