The German digital association Bitkom warns of a migration of data centers due to planned legislative changes. Specifically, it concerns an energy efficiency law. This would significantly tighten the requirements for data centers, the association announced in Berlin on Tuesday. President Achim Berg criticized: “With this energy efficiency law, data centers are being driven out of Germany.”
The bill contains a wealth of detailed and over-regulation with efficiency requirements not planned for any other industry and simply not feasible in the current state of affairs.
“If the current rules remain in place, new data centers may only be built where residual heat networks are present or are mandatory. Until now, however, waste heat networks have been planned completely independently of data centers and, conversely, the choice of location for data centers must follow a different logic than waste heat networks,” says Berg.
Waste heat must be used
The bill stipulates that waste heat from data centers must be used more effectively in the future. New data centers will be required to meet energy efficiency standards and to use waste heat from a minimum of 10 to 20 percent gradually. Existing data centers must also meet efficiency requirements.
In addition, companies with high energy consumption should implement energy or environmental management systems and make concrete plans for the implementation of economic energy efficiency measures.
