Construction work for series production of the electric drives, which will start in 2025, is in full swing. When Chancellor Karl Nehammer visited the plant in Steyr (Upper Austria), the BMW AG Board of Directors revealed that the current 4,500 employees will not be enough due to double production.
The building, which will soon house the logistics, is already there. Directly opposite it, a site of 150 by 100 meters is currently being built that will house the production of the electric drives. “We are very much on schedule,” revealed Adrienne Wallasch as she presented construction site progress to Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Governor Thomas Stelzer at BMW’s Steyr plant on Tuesday.
In building 52 alone, 800 employees work here for the production of electric drives. That is why there will be a second company restaurant with more than 250 seats. From 2025, series production for e-drives will start at BMW Steyr, which means that the plant not only includes combustion engines, but is also fully on course for e-mobility.
Growing need for employees
Or which of the 4500 jobs could be cut? “We are currently building e-mobility in parallel with combustion technology and see a growing need for employees. We do not assume that we will have a reduction there by 2030,” emphasizes BMW AG Production Board Member Milan Nedeljković.
