Travelers beware: – German railway strikes also noticeable in Austria

Date:

There will be a strike in German train traffic between 03:00 and 11:00 on Friday. The effects will also be felt in Austria: trains to and from Germany will run for a short time or be stopped, ÖBB warned. All train connections via the Deutsches Eck are also affected.

Night train connections to and from Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands have already been affected from Thursday night to Friday, ÖBB representatives said. Travelers are asked to find out more about their planned connections in the ÖBB timetable information Scotty, the ÖBB app or by calling customer service on 05-1717-0.

Rail replacement service for shortened routes
In local traffic, trains run from, to and via Germany for a short time. In Salzburg, trains of line S3 to Freilassing start and end in Salzburg-liefering, trains of line S2 start and end in Salzburg-Hauptbahnhof. In Upper Austria, slow trains to Passau only run from/to Schärding. Local trains to Simbach/Inn start and end in Braunau am Inn. In Vorarlberg, trains to Lindau-Reutin stop in Lochau-Hörbranz and in Tyrol, local transport to Mittenwald only runs from/to Scharnitz. According to ÖBB, rail replacement buses are running for part of the connections.

In long-distance transport, there are changes not only during the strike period, but also in the hours after. This is due to planned construction work. “We are not concerned with punishing passengers. On the contrary: we are only interested in increasing the pressure on the employer’, says Cosima Ingenschay, Collective Labor Agreement employee of the Railway Union. The union is currently negotiating with about 50 railway companies about higher salaries in the second round. For employees, at least 650 euros more per month or twelve percent for the upper income is required.

A new compromise is negotiated first
Deutsche Bahn personnel director Martin Seiler spoke of a “useless and unnecessary strike” on Wednesday. He suggested, among other things, that one should look for a collective bargaining compromise for the public service: this initially provides for a tax and royalty-free inflation adjustment in several stages of a total of 3000 euros. From March 2024 there will be a basic amount of 200 euros and then a wage increase of 5.5 percent. This proposal will be negotiated over the weekend.

On Thursday and Friday, employees at the airports of Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn and Hamburg in Germany also went on strike. “In connection with the strike, longer waiting times up to and including the cancellation or cancellation of flights are to be expected,” said trade union Verdi. It is a coincidence that the strikes coincide this time. The unions had not reached an agreement beforehand, it said.
