Tobacco group British American Tobacco has been fined more than $629 million for illegally selling tobacco products to North Korea. The deals violated US economic sanctions.
It is the largest sentence ever imposed by the US Justice Department in connection with the sanctions against North Korea. It is a warning to companies worldwide.
The sale raised $428 million in sales
British American Tobacco illegally sold tobacco products to North Korea between 2007 and 2017 with the help of a subcontractor in Singapore. As a result, the group made about $428 million in sales.
According to the ministry, the US sanctions are aimed at the North Korean regime because of its repression of its own citizens and the nuclear weapons program with which North Korea threatens the international community.
