The computer group IBM wants to hire fewer people for some jobs because their work can be taken over by software based on artificial intelligence (AI). He expects that in, for example, HR administration, about a third of jobs can be replaced by AI and automation in five years’ time, says IBM boss Arvind Krischna to financial service Bloomberg.
This will suspend or delay hiring for such administrative work, Krishna said. IBM employs approximately 26,000 people who have no direct contact with customers.
According to the group, some of the vacancies will not be filled. Software development and customer contact areas, on the other hand, remain discontinued. IBM has a total of about 260,000 employees.
Big hype about text machines
The text engine ChatGPT, Google’s competitor software Bard and programs that can generate images from text descriptions are currently causing a stir. For example, ChatGPT formulates texts by estimating word for word the likely continuation of a sentence.
A consequence of this programming is that the software not only comes up with correct information, but also completely incorrect information – but that no difference is recognizable to the user. This has led to fears that their skills could be used, for example, to produce and spread disinformation. However, experts expect that this problem can be solved.
