Chip giant TSMC is planning its first factory in Germany with local partners

Date:

According to a media report, the world’s largest chip contract manufacturer TSMC from Taiwan is negotiating with partners to build a chip factory in Germany. It concerns an investment of up to 10 billion euros, including subsidies, the financial news agency Bloomberg reports on Wednesday based on insiders. NXP Semiconductors, Bosch and Infineon are named as partners.

An Infineon spokesperson said the company would not comment on market rumors. The other companies did not initially respond to a request for comment.

In March, Reuters reported, citing insiders, that construction of a TSMC plant in Saxony, Germany, was “within reach.” The Taiwanese concern is planning a factory that will produce semiconductors with a size of 22 to 28 nanometers, such as those used in the automotive industry. “These are the chips that the German industry needs,” said the person familiar with the process.

In November, in an interview with Reuters, Infineon boss Jochen Hanebeck spoke out in favor of more chip factories being built by contract manufacturers in Europe, saying chips in the range of up to 28 nanometers are at stake. The chip company from Munich is building a factory in Dresden for five billion euros.
