Dispute between trade and government: At issue is who is driving up food prices and profiting from the crisis. Billa boss Marcel Haraszti talks to Conny Bischofberger about balance sheets and activism, the much-quoted ‘Billa cashier’ and a crazy market.
Somewhere in the hills of Tuscany, ‘Mister Billa’ is sitting in a living room on Ascension Day, waiting for the ‘Telko’ who set up his office in Wiener Neudorf this afternoon. Our interview this time takes place in the form of a conference call.
“I went to Italy with my family for a long weekend,” says Marcel Haraszti, when the group headquarters brought us together, “friends of ours have a farm here.” His voice sounds relaxed and friendly, but after the first question it bosses 46,600 commercial employees at 2,600 locations per hundred and vents his anger.
“crown”: The absurdly high food prices – also at Billa, Bipa and Adeg – make it difficult for many people and politicians. Why couldn’t you voluntarily waive price increases?
