Payment service provider Mastercard has been experiencing a worldwide malfunction since Monday afternoon. Millions of customers who wanted and want to pay online are affected.
The outage affects both debit and credit cards. It does not matter which bank you have your account with. For example, Share Talk reported on Twitter that there were more and more reports on the Downdetector website, which monitors disruptions to digital services (see tweet below). According to a source close to NatWest, online transactions have been affected. The payments do not go through, the connection is lost.
Bank: Use alternative means of payment
While some are reporting a worldwide problem on social media, others are writing about a “Europe-wide partial Mastercard outage”. Austria is also affected. The malfunction was not resolved on Monday evening (as of 9.30 pm). The company itself has not yet taken a public position on social media. The cause of the problem is also not yet clear.
Individual customers reported on Twitter that the amounts were being deducted from their balances despite the disruption. Meanwhile, UBS Switzerland asked affected customers to use an alternative means of payment.
