Almost daily, the shadows of the past catch up with René Benko. Kika/Leiner is currently in focus. The real estate juggler acquired the chain overnight thanks to the help of ex-chancellor Sebastian Kurz. He wanted to secure 5,000 jobs.
Kika/Leiner: SPÖ demands job guarantee
Now he has given up on the loss-making furniture chain (not without first acquiring top pieces), and about 2,000 people are losing their jobs. The SPÖ called in parliament on Wednesday for a job guarantee for them.
Tax benefits insured?
Benko’s problem: It is suspected that he could have obtained tax benefits through his commitment. Mainly because of a close relationship with ex-financial general Thomas Schmid.
New clues
Now new clues are emerging. According to “Falter”, an ex-department chief intervened in favor of Benko’s tax case at the Tuchlauben complex in central Vienna, as it secured 5,000 jobs. Researchers are interested in this case. It is the presumption of innocence. Benko’s lawyer Peter Zöchbauer: “There has never been any unlawful influence on a process.”
