Germany has a national security strategy for the first time. The document presented by the federal government in Berlin on Wednesday has 40 pages. With this, Germany wants to respond to the challenges of an unstable world, said Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).
Strengthen protection against external threats
According to the security strategy, all resources and instruments are intended to work together to strengthen Germany’s security against external threats. To this end, all relevant policy areas and actors must be involved: federal, state and business people.
The National Security Strategy identifies a number of topics as central challenges for Germany’s security:
- national and allied defense
- Civil Defense and Civil Protection
- international crisis management and development policy
- Protection against foreign influence and espionage
- Protection of technology and critical infrastructure
- Cyber and space security
- Raw material and energy security
- Dealing with the climate crisis and pandemics
- Food Safety
This ranges from national and alliance defense to infrastructure protection and cyber and space security to raw material, energy and food security. Moreover, the strategy will only work “if we anchor it at the European and transatlantic level,” said Secretary of State Baerbock.
Criticism was not long in coming. Above all, there are doubts about the implementation because the participation of so many participants makes a uniform line difficult. There will be a clear China strategy in the autumn.
