E-Control is concerned about the capacity of the grids, the expansion of photovoltaic installations is going too slowly.
More and more homebuilders are building their own rooftop photovoltaic system, and business is booming. In Lower Austria, for example, where a quarter of all solar panels are located in Austria, applications quadrupled in the first half of the year. E-Control expects a national increase of approximately 100,000 measuring points per year. At the end of 2022, 250,000 PV installations were registered.
“Building new lines like crazy”
This leads to problems: some network operators have a long processing time. To shorten the process, E-Control wants customers to be able to request online access themselves. But there will be more feed-in restrictions because the distribution grids cannot absorb all the electricity at certain times.
“We’re building new lines like crazy anyway,” says the e-business. But the familiar hurdles are diminishing: it takes eight to ten years before a 110 kV line is approved. You have to estimate five to six years for a new substation. The demand is huge: EVN alone builds 40 new substations and 800 transformer stations every year.
