Traffic is now declining – Zuckerberg presents Twitter with a real problem

Date:

After the strong start of the alternative Twitter threads, there are warning signs for the original. Figures from two web analytics companies show a drop in traffic to Twitter. Meanwhile, one analyst estimates that threads could quickly become a billion-dollar business for the Facebook group Meta. Threads reached 100 million users in just five days – without being available in the European Union.

According to an evaluation by web analytics firm Compareweb, traffic to Twitter fell five percent after starting the threads on Thursday in a weekly comparison. Compared to the same days last year, the decrease was 11 percent, Compareweb reports Tuesday. Figures from IT security provider Cloudflare also showed a drop in data traffic to the short message service, company boss Matthew Prince wrote on Twitter.

According to Evercore analyst Mark Mahaney, Threads could add $8 billion in revenue to Meta by 2025. It wouldn’t be much for the Facebook group: Meta earned more than $ 116 billion last year. But that would already be far more than the $5 billion in revenue Twitter generated in its last full year as a publicly traded company. Mahaney expects Threads to have about 200 million daily active users by 2025. Meta hasn’t built any monetization methods into threads yet.

Twitter owner Elon Musk and the company boss he recently appointed Linda Yaccarino were defiant in light of the numbers. “There is only ONE Twitter,” Yaccarino said on the service. Last week was the day with the highest Twitter usage since February, she wrote without further details. Musk promoted the platform by saying that anyone can express their true selves on it. He bought Twitter last October for $44 billion after months of trying to get out of the expensive deal.
