In the first half of this year there were a sixth more car registrations, also because many older orders are now finally being delivered.
According to Statistics Austria, 126,700 new cars had been registered at the end of June, an increase of almost 17 percent on the previous year.
In total, instead of the last 215,000, 245,000 to 250,000 new cars should hit the streets this year, dealer chairman Klaus Edelsbrunner estimates. However, the strong growth is also due to the “catch-up effect” because many vehicles are now being delivered that were actually ordered in 2022.
The order backlog is now cleared
At that time, delivery times were sometimes more than a year due to a lack of chips, etc. This order backlog is now being cleared. The second driver was alternative engines: almost 40 percent of new registrations were hybrid models (22% petrol, 6% diesel) or fully electric (18.4%).
But most of these were company cars, only 21 percent were bought by private individuals. Edelsbrunner explains: “Due to the economic uncertainty and the high electricity price, this is not going to happen.”
