Bitter crop failures, pests, diseases and drought – the farmers in Lower Austria take on a great responsibility. After all, the country is the breadbasket of Austria. After all the horror reports about bad harvests, many Lower Austrians wonder which types of fruit and vegetables actually come from our homeland. The “Krone” tells you what the situation on the local fields really looks like.
Half of all arable land in Germany is in Lower Austria. This means that the federal state is not only one step ahead when it comes to potatoes, sugar beets or – despite the good reputation of pumpkin seed oil from Styria – even pumpkins. This means that local farmers are also most affected by erratic weather conditions such as drought and rainy periods (such as in April and May this year) or when the EU bans another plant protection product.
