Supply chain disruptions and numerous product recalls have led to dramatic bottlenecks in infant formula in the United States in recent months. Now the government in Washington wants to relax import rules and fill the empty shelves with foreign products.
The FDA announced Monday that it would relax import rules for this. FDA Director Robert Califf said, “We hope this call to the global market will be heard and international companies will seize the opportunity to improve the delivery of products that are the sole source of nutrition for many young children.”
Product Recalls and Major Factory Failure
Supply problems were exacerbated by the closure of a factory owned by Abbott, the largest infant formula manufacturer in the US. The producer had recalled several product lines after four babies became ill and two died, possibly due to bacterial contamination. Production at one of the company’s factories in the state of Michigan has been completely halted for the time being.
According to its own statements, the FDA has now agreed with the manufacturer on several precautions for the factory’s reopening, as the authority further announced. However, the company said it would be several weeks before production could start there again and deliver baby milk to retailers.
President Biden has intervened
But many families can’t wait that long, they need several servings of milk every day for their offspring. Now US President Joe Biden has also become involved and has instructed the government to ensure that infant formula is available. According to the FDA, 98 percent of substances consumed are normally baby food Made in the USA. Imports have so far mainly come from trading partners in Mexico, Ireland and the Netherlands.
