National inflation, 8.3% in April, exceeds that of the major euro countries such as France (5.4%), Italy (6.3%), Portugal (7.4%) or Germany (7.8%)
Spain registered an inflation rate of 8.3% in April, one and a half points less than the record in March (9.8%), but still remains the leader in price increases in the eurozone. Data presented this Wednesday by Eurostat shows that the Spanish CPI is almost a point higher than the euro area average, which ended at 7.4% in April and well above that of other countries, as close as France ( 5.4%) or Portugal (7.4%.
The war in Ukraine affects price increases due to higher energy prices, but also the lack of raw materials usually imported from that country or from Russia, hampering supply chains. In fact, energy in the eurozone became 37.5% more expensive in April than a year ago, a very high rate but seven points lower than the March record, according to Eurosotat data. Fresh food, on the other hand, rose 1.5 points more than in March and reached 9.2% compared to a year ago.
The major euro countries with lower inflation than Spain include Italy (6.3%) and Germany (7.8%). But Spain is not the European country with the highest inflation rate, it is surpassed by others such as Estonia (which had the highest rate in the EU at 19.1%), Lithuania (16.6%), Czech Republic (13.2%) , the Netherlands (11.2%) or Belgium (9.3%).
In the euro area as a whole, inflation stood at 7.4% in April, the same pace as in March, representing two months, the highest price increase in the entire historical series, mainly due to the rise in energy and prices. At the level of the European Union, the rate rose to 8.1%, three tenths more than in March.
The European Central Bank (ECB) warned a few days ago that inflation will continue to rise in the near term, although they are confident that “it will peak in two or three months”.
