We need to talk about our neutrality!

Date:

At the latest now that Sweden and Finland are marching in big strides towards NATO, we need to talk seriously about our neutrality. Of course, this does not mean that we have to apply for membership tomorrow. But anyone who refuses an open discussion has no security concept at all.

Because when you say neutrality, you also have to say army budget. And to be honest, it looks pretty bad. The fact that in an emergency we wouldn’t even have enough uniforms for all the gunmen and that even taking the fever during the corona pandemic presented the military with a huge task, should give us food for thought. What if the war came to us too? The catastrophe was unimaginable!

We need not have any illusions…
A cheap announcement that the already meager budget will be increased to 1% of gross domestic product in the future does not help either. However, there is not yet a major strategy on what to do with the money in the future and how we want to position ourselves in the field of security policy. It won’t work without sensible planning. We need not have any illusions about that.

Nostalgia for neutrality does not protect us from war
With this starting point, then agreeing with the eloquent “We were neutral, are neutral and remain neutral” is only half the truth. Of course that sounds good and catchy – but with this chorus of hits, we can’t put a potential attacker to flight! Because our nostalgia for neutrality offers no protection against war and attack. Because it needs weapons – and not folklore.

Without NATO we need protection too
So if we want to maintain our neutrality, we must rearm without ifs and buts. Our neighbour, Switzerland, is leading the way. Not wanting to get involved in war is legitimate and a good concept in principle, but it’s also a luxury that comes at a cost. Without NATO, we need a really good strategy to protect ourselves. Everything else is naive.

Can we have a decent discussion?
That is why we urgently need to talk about our neutrality and how to maintain it in times of war. Any muzzle to considerations in all directions is wrong and gets us nowhere. The discussion should be appreciative, honest and open. Or have we already forgotten that after Corona?
