According to the new salary report, incomes increased by 8.9 percent this year. The pharmaceutical industry pays the best, the catering industry the least. The highest salaries are in Vienna.
According to the new salary report from recruitment agency Stepstone, the median income in Austria is 50,633 euros gross per year (8.9 percent more than in 2022). This is the ‘median’, which means that 50 percent is above and 50 percent below this value. More than 40,000 records were evaluated.
Discrimination against women was also investigated. If you assume the same requirements (educational qualifications, professional experience, etc.), you get a ‘gender gap’ of about 6,000 euros per year. Only full-time employees were surveyed so that it is comparable.
Large companies pay better than small companies
Regionally, you can earn the best in Vienna, followed by Vorarlberg and Salzburg. Companies pay better than smaller companies. Managers earn on average 25 percent more. Education also pays off: those who have studied successfully receive an average of 33 percent more.
Of course, professional experience also plays a role. The average starting salary is 40,833 euros per year. Anyone who has worked there for more than 25 years can look forward to an average income of 60,667 euros. Bonuses and commissions are included.

60 percent are dissatisfied with their income
According to Stepstone, the best paying industry is the pharmaceutical industry (66,547 euros). This is followed by space travel, the oil industry and banks. At the bottom you will find tourism and agencies (see graph above). According to the survey, 60 percent are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with their pay, compared to 53 percent a year ago. Only 4.7 percent say they are “very satisfied” with their current income.
