The flight staff of Lufthansa subsidiary Discover are on strike on Friday. A 24-hour strike is planned, according to a circular from the Cockpit Association (VC) (see video above). Previously, almost 96 percent of union members had voted in favor of industrial action.
The VC wants to maintain the first collective labor agreements on salaries and employment conditions. Negotiations with the employer failed. The holiday airline Discover Airlines was founded two and a half years ago and is a subsidiary of Lufthansa. To date, there is no collective agreement for pilots or flight attendants. The UFO union is negotiating on behalf of cabin crew and is also calling on its members to hold a warning strike on Friday. Management would ‘block collective labor agreements that are common in the market and postpone or even refuse negotiations altogether’.
Discover Airlines: Plus also without collective labor agreement
Discover Airlines, in turn, accused the union of unilaterally declaring that negotiations had failed early this year. Until the first strike call shortly before Christmas, talks were “very good” and “advanced”. There was some agreement with the union. Nevertheless, the company will “immediately increase” compensation for its employees.
The pilots’ warning strike on December 23 went smoothly for most passengers. Discover was able to reschedule flights outside the five-hour strike period. However, a longer strike could result in flight cancellations.
The Lufthansa Group holiday airline was initially launched in the summer of 2021 under the name “Eurowings Discover” and was later renamed “Discover Airlines”. So far, 24 aircraft are deployed to the Frankfurt and Munich hubs on long and medium-haul routes. The Discover should be cheaper than the core brand and compete with other holiday airlines such as the Condor.
