Inflation has continued to rise in Austria: according to a quick estimate by Statistics Austria, inflation would have risen to 8.0 percent in May, from 7.2 percent in April. This is the highest value since September 1975, Statistics chief Tobias Thomas said Tuesday.
The main drivers continued to be price increases for energy and fuel. Compared to the previous month, the domestic price level has risen by 1.1 percent according to the preliminary calculation.
According to estimates, the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) for Austria, which is used for comparisons in the eurozone, was 8.1 percent higher than the same month last year and 1.0 percent higher than in April. Statistics Austria will report extensively on inflation in Austria on 17 June.
