From the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, they explain that this expenditure is very close to pre-Covid levels, “even if we exclude the effects of inflation”.
Minister Reyes Maroto assessed these figures very positively and emphasized that Easter “consolidated the rapid and intense reactivation of the tourism sector and exceeded our own expectations”. In addition, he pointed out that Spain receives a tourist who stays longer in the country and as a result spends more on his trip, indicating that “we are moving towards a better quality and more profitable tourism model.”
Despite the uncertainty of the war and its effects, Spain is one of the favorite international destinations for travel, so Maroto’s predictions for the summer season “indicate we will restore pre-pandemic levels”.
Data from the INE shows that average expenditure per tourist increased by 6.5% year-on-year to €1,131 in April, while average daily expenditure increased by 18.3% to €155.
The United Kingdom was the main issuing country in April, with 1.2 million tourists and an increase of 5,122.8% compared to April 2021. Germany and France were the next countries with the most tourists to visit Spain. In particular, Germany contributed 989,807 tourists, six times more than in April 2021, while France contributed 826,193 visitors, seven times more.
