Despite the climate crisis, the Austrians clearly hold on to the burner. According to a recent study, only a few can currently imagine to manage a pure electric car in the future.

With the Global Automotive Consumer Study, the Deloitte consultancy ceases annually to stop consumers with current developments in the automotive sector. For the current edition, 31,000 consumers from 30 countries were interviewed, including 1,000 people from Austria. As a result, the E-AUTO market in Austria contrasts with other European countries who are stepping on the spot. An improvement is not in sight.

“The demand for electric vehicles is very low in this country. According to the study, only 7% of the respondents would choose a vehicle that is fully working on batteries when buying a car, only 8% for a plug-in hybrid, ”explains Matthias Kunsch, partner at Deloitte Austria. “These are frightening low numbers that endanger the lead time of mobility in this country.”

In any case, the proven tests are currently at the top: more than half of the Austrians (57%) still prefer cars with internal combustion engines. 53%in Germany.

In terms of E-Car plan, Austria is at the level of Spain, in Germany the value is 14% twice as high. In Italy, 9% then want to buy an electric car, 27% in China. In the US, electric cars have an even more difficult position than with us: only 5% want a power there.

Stromer in Austria fails as a result
The reasons that, according to the respondents, speak to an electric car are diverse. Above all, the so -called low series (49 %) and the high acquisition costs (43 %) have a deterrent effect for many. “The prices are definitely a reason why the e-car market in Austria is not going to work. After all, the majority of respondents do not want to spend more than 30,000 euros for the next vehicle. There are now also cheaper models, but the range in this segment must certainly be wider, “emphasizes Matthias Kunsch.

On the other hand, the cost factor is also a decisive motivator for buying an electric vehicle: so many consumers mention lower fuel costs (48 %) and state subsidies (27 %) as essential stimuli. The return of public financing that is currently being discussed would continue to dampen the willingness to buy for electric cars.

High potential for public charging infrastructure
Fast, simple charging and a well -developed charging infrastructure are also considered a condition for the purchase of an electric car. For many, the store at home is not an option: every third party indicates to use the workplace or public charging stations instead to charge your own electric vehicle. The installation of a charging station is often not feasible (38 %). Moreover, 18 % of the respondents declare that the costs for installing a private charging station are simply not portable.

“These results make it clear that the success of the mobility transition depends not only on the availability of electric vehicles, but especially on an extensive and easily accessible range of loading options. Another expansion of the charging network in Austria is absolutely necessary, “says Matthias Kunsch.

New mobility trends as an opportunity
Although the e-car market is still being delayed, new mobility models in the automotive industry apparently are increasing. Almost a quarter of the Austrians are open to “Mobility as a Service” (Maas) in the future and to do without their own car.
