Nowadays, anyone who goes out to eat after the wave of price increases usually has to swallow when they see the bill. Even at the Schnitzelwirt in Vienna Neubau, the schnitzel with side dish now costs 17 euros! It is cheaper: in publicly accessible canteens. The “Krone” has an overview for the whole of Austria of where the cheapest places to eat are.
Every Wednesday around noon there is a huge rush to the Mediaprint canteen in Vienna’s 19th district, which is run by the Eurest company. The reason: Wednesday is schnitzel day and pork, chicken and turkey schnitzels are served alternately. Employees pay little anyway, but: The company restaurant is also open to external employees – and they also pay little, namely only 6.90 euros for a schnitzel with side dish and salad. Restaurant manager Thomas Müllner: “We sell the most food on Wednesdays. If you offer a chicken schnitzel with fries, you have won, that always works best.”
There are a number of publicly accessible canteens throughout Austria – and the “Krone” now lists for the first time the locations of the four largest commercial kitchen operators Eurest, Gourmet, SV Group and Sodexo that can be visited by all guests. We also show where the menus cost and how much. Simply click or swipe through the image below.
